PRIMAL FEAR Guitarist Says 'Painkiller' Was The Last 'Real' JUDAS PRIEST Album
October 24, 2005Rock Something recently conducted an interview with PRIMAL FEAR guitarist Tom Naumann. An excerpt from the chat follows:
Rock Something: You’re clearly big JUDAS PRIEST fans – what did you think of "Angel of Retribution"?
Tom Naumann: "To be honest I think that they not deliver the stuff that everybody expected. It's a good album, but the last thing they did together as the 'real' PRIEST was 'Painkiller', which is a killer album. It's a metal masterpiece and it's hard to top it or even to get next to this level, but 'Angel …' was a bit of a disappointment for me and some fans."
Rock Something: Do you like being compared to PRIEST?
Tom Naumann: "In the beginning it really helped us a lot. After PRIEST released their first album with Ripper Owens and the public was kind of disappointed, we had a lot of reviews saying that our new album should have been the one that PRIEST has to release after 'Painkiller' and so a lot of people checked our debut and bought it. Personally I do think that we never sounded like PRIEST. The only comparison between both bands is the sound of the vocals, but music-wise I think that we are not really comparable. Okay, we do metal and PRIEST influenced a lot of bands and I would lie if I would not admit that they had a great impact on me when I started making music, but I never wanted to be a PRIEST wannabe. If you listen to our new album, 'Seven Seals', then you will recognize that we do have nothing in common with PRIEST and I hope that the talking will stop."
Rock Something: Do you plan to tour the USA at all?
Tom Naumann: "We toured the States together with HALFORD, TESTAMENT, IMMORTAL, AMON AMARTH in 2003. Unfortunately the tour got cancelled after a few shows. We also played a couple of shows in 2004 and we are really looking forward to play the U.S. in 2006, but there are no shows confirmed yet. Hopefully we will have the opportunity to join forces with a cool band to make a U.S. tour happen."
